Clever Stray has made a very beautiful and clever blog widget based on how different choices can effect your path in life - the theme of Caroline's new novel, Black Boxes - and we hope you'll join in by taking part. You must make a series of choices and then you will be taken to a mystery blog of another person taking part who picked similar answers to you.... who knows where your answers may lead! You can also put the Black Boxes widget on to your own blog.
If you decide to do that, here are the instructions:
For blogger - there are 2 styles of templates, old style and new style. To add the widget to a non-blogger template, follow the old style instructions.
If you don't know what kind of template you have then you probably have new style!
To add the widget to a new style blog template:
Log in to your blog. Go to "Layout". Choose "Page Elements". Choose to "Add a page element" in your side bar. Choose "HTML / Javascript" as the type of element. Give your new element a title, and into the content area paste exactly the green code below (only the green stuff). You can write text above and below it if you like, but the whole of the green stuff must be in there, intact.
To add the widget to an old style blog template:
Go to your template. Insert the green code in the area which defines your sidebar. Feel free to email me (Badger - as Stray is now away in distant lands creating other magical things!) if you have problems.

The ginger snaps are in the biscuit tin, Cas, and Trousers is bouncing on my couch. I think we may shortly have a full house, and Stray is jetting off to the States first thing so she won't be here to sort you all out.
I am very worried that I may run out of tea bags, and my programming skills are non existent.

Hi b on Stray's behalf, thank you very much! She is indeed super clever.
The number of times it has sent me to visit trousers and hes not there because hes over here I thought I best follow him if I want a share of his beer. Second thoughts he does make a good cup of tea.
I have installed the widget so that should give you a few more options of places to visit. By the way I have been sent to other blogs it's just that its more trousers than not.

I love the new widget, however I am not finding my blog when I click the black box. I was hitting my blog earlier. Can you tell me how this works? I am not sure what happened.
Hey everyone!
For those who are confused, basically the widget works by giving you the opportunity to add your blog URL at the very end, when you have clicked through all the boxes and made all your choices you can either click on the top button to visit a blog (you do not have to put in 2 new choices or your URL each time).
Or, before you click to be taken to a new blog you can enter your blog URL at the bottom, this will automatically add you to the list of possible sites, you do not need to install the widget to be included on the list. But that does of course help more people find it!
The blog that you get forwarded to will be randomly chosen from all those on the database to one that most closely matches the answers you picked.
For those people on Wordpress or Typepad I shall go and have a look at how these two work and come back to you about how to add the widget.

Help,please. My blog is on blogspot (http://sueguineyblog.blogspot.com) and when I put the widet on, the html came out as printd in the text area and I can't get rid of it. weird. Any ideas? Thanks!
To install the Widget in Wordpress see this link: - http://codex.wordpress.org/Widgets_SubPanel
Basically go to DESIGN > WIDGETS and add the widget code here. Alternatively you can go to DESIGN > THEME EDITOR and then click on sidebar theme file and insert the code here.

I am looking into Typepad now, as not used that one before.
SUE - It looks like part of the code, (the first bit) has been pasted in twice, if you are on new blogger click to edit the section that you installed the widget on and the easiest way would be to just delete all the code you put in and copy and paste it in again, rather than picking out the bit that has been repeated. Hope that works!

Sue - I know what it is, you are missing the < from the start. Check back at the green code you need to paste in, you must have just missed off the first bit when you copied it!
Go to edit and pop that in and it will be fine.

There is a bit of a difference between a wordpress.com site and a wordpress.org site. The main difference is that .org sites own and control all that goes along with their blog, while .com blogs are limited to the function the themes provide.
That said, wordpress.com users (the majority of bloggers) won't be able to post the widget because it's Java based, and wordpress.com hates Java.
